Medical Care

In case of medical emergency in greater Shanghai, dial the Shanghai Medical Emergency Number: 120. For free, confidential and anonymous assistance, information and emotional support you can visit www.lifelineshanghai.com.

The Consular Section maintains a list of doctors, dentists, and hospitals known to treat foreigners. To access this list, please see Medical Facilities and Doctors. American citizens who require medical attention or hospitalization may contact the Consular Section for assistance and/or additional information; however, Consulate medical personnel are prohibited from treating persons not employed by the U.S. Government.

While the U.S. Government cannot pay medical costs incurred by Americans abroad, we can assist hospitalized Americans to notify family members in the United States and arrange for the transfer of funds to Shanghai.
